Fragment 02

Hypervigilance and feminine cognition

Vigilance can look elegant

What gets praised as intuition is often an alarm system that never got permission to power down.

I write about the women who hear the weather change before the window moves. The fork set down a little too sharply. The joke with metal under it. The delay before a text lands back. The sudden brightness in someone’s voice that means the anger has gone underground, not away. This speed gets romanticized because it is useful to call it feminine wisdom. Often it is pattern recognition built under pressure.

A body trained on volatility gets quick. It clocks the shift before language has assembled its witness statement. Then the mind arrives and starts cross-examining the evidence. Maybe I imagined it. Maybe I am tired. Maybe I am unfair. Meanwhile the body is already right, already bracing, already reorganizing around the thing everyone else will admit existed three hours later.

There is humiliation in being accurate too early.

There is humiliation in being accurate too early. Women know this. They learn to dilute their own perception to keep the social temperature manageable. They round off the sentence. They smile while saying it. They present the observation as a question so other people can save face on the way to the point.

So yes, some women are extraordinarily intuitive. But I want to be careful with the romance of that word. Sometimes what looks mystical is simply expensive. It was purchased with years of listening for the sound before the sound, reading posture like syntax, studying the gap between what a person says and what their hands are already preparing to do.

And this is where emotional labor folds back in. Not only sensing the rupture, but carrying it privately until it becomes socially admissible to mention. Not only detecting the danger, but managing the feelings of the people who are late to their own behavior. Vigilance can look elegant from the outside. Inside, it is often a body that has forgotten what neutral costs.
